In the present day world, people work day and night to earn money and rewards. So they don’t find time to spend time with their family, friends and relatives. Human life is slowly changing into machine life. This is no peace, silence, love, affection among people in the current scenario. You cannot attain/get peace when you simply think that you want to live a peaceful life. This is not cinema; life is different from the imaginary world shown in movies and films. Peace comes only with tolerance and adjustability. When we take a resolution to be quiet, calm to live a happy life, there will be people around us who keep on disturbing us. So to lead a happy and peaceful life, first we must inculcate the habit of practicing tolerance. It will only help us in managing the disturbance around us. There is a saying in English “Give Respect and Take Respect”. Respecting people around us also matters a lot. We can maintain a healthy life but it is not possible to have a Wealthy Society unless people are united. Unity begins where there is care, affection and respect among people. So money and wealth alone is not enough to live a happy and peaceful life in this world. There is something beyond it. So as students we must be tolerant in order to face all the hardships that come across our life.

The one quality that makes us humans unique, from other life forms on this planet is that we have an extra ‘sixth’ sense — a sense of understanding, of compassion — and of being wise — wise to distinguish between good and bad deeds. It is a boon that humans can express their feelings, and understand them; but, many human beings lack the very deed of understanding, and respecting such feelings of others. When we move back in time, we can find that many riots have occurred – in almost all kingdoms of the world, whose key cause is mostly the desire for reign over territories. Hitler has a very bad image in the global society, as he, in the name of promoting justice to Christianity, killed Jews in large numbers, decimating thousands of people. It was only because of Mahatma Gandhi that India has tasted the honey ‘Independence’, through the glass of ‘Ahimsa’, and inspiring lot others to look at the nation as the ‘Land of Non-Violence’. It is true that the British did suppress Indians, ill – treated them and exploited their wealth for their benefits, but Mahatma Gandhi, being the ‘Light of the Nation’ and ‘a Symbol of Ahimsa’, showed a way to the nation, to adopt non – violence. Even in a situation of humiliation, he greeted the British with a smile and respected them. India would not have been as it is today, if people chose war and riot as a means of attaining swaraj. Many people would have been killed in large numbers taking into account the aftermath effects of such a war. Gandhiji tolerated the moves of the British and planned a strategy such that the British would leave the country, and the people of the nation would peacefully protest against the government, ensuring that no bloodshed would occur. In the case of Sri Lanka, the Government did not respect the wished and interests of the minority Tamils, which led to political and social instability. Today, India is one of the safest lands on earth just because people have self respect here, and people respect others. Peace begins when people tolerate the humilities done to them, if any, and respects the feelings of everyone. Only when we start respecting ourselves, we respect others. Self – respect is the beginning of tolerance, keeping sympathy in mind. Tolerance is the first step towards harmony. Harmony among people promotes fraternity. Achieving fraternity globally will ultimately lead to a peaceful world – something which the people on earth have never tasted. Let’s respect ourselves and respect others — Let’s join hands to make a better and a peaceful earth!
